Sounding scary or intense? It isn’t, really. Drama Club is first and foremost a safe place for kids who love to geek out about theater and performing. They’ll be surrounded by a supportive community of kids with the same passion, and teachers who remember what it’s like to be there too!
What We Do
Weekly classes focus on a combo of warm-ups, ensemble exercises, and rehearsal to make each student a more creative and expressive performer. This might be as varied as taking a scene from a classic movie and recreating it to study style and technique, or learning about movement qualities and how they make a character. This work will all move towards a performance at the end of the quarter, showing friends and family the work they’ve done. Each quarter runs 6 weeks, and can be just as effective taken by itself, or as part of a year-long commitment.
Where We’re Located
Classes, rehearsals, and performances are all held at SparkStudio at 240 South Broadway. Described as somewhere between a jewel-box and a hole in the wall, Spark’s intimate 30-seat space fosters a creative, DIY spirit that we instill in all our students. Kids aren’t running around near power tools or half-constructed sets, making it a safer environment than more theaters. And we’re proud to be in a diverse, eclectic neighborhood that prizes the arts and performance. Parents may find themselves regulars at the coffee shop downstairs, or at the many neighborhood restaurants.
When It Happens
Drama Club meets Mondays from 4–7pm. Fall semester starts September 19th and ends October 24th (6 weeks) plus performances October 25th and 26th.
Who’s Teaching
All classes are facilitated by Michael Emmitt, Spark’s Artistic Director (meet Michael on our About Us page). After over a decade as a private voice and acting teacher, and running several children’s theater programs, Michael comes qualified not only as a teacher, but also as an active member of Denver’s theater community. Additional teachers who specialize in dance, music, or other performance areas may be invited in, but Michael is always present at every rehearsal, ensuring a healthy, nurturing environment is always of paramount importance.
